Dry Ingredients:

  • Flour – 1 cup
  • Cocoa powder – 1/4 cup
  • Baking powder – 1 tsp
  • Baking soda – 1/2 tsp
  • Salt – 1/4 tsp
  • Sugar – 3/4 cup (powdered)

Wet Ingredients:

  • Milk – 1 cup (warm)
  • Oil – 1/4 cup
  • Lemon juice/vinegar – 1 tbsp
  • Vanilla extract – 1 tsp
  • Chocolate chips or chopped nuts – (optional)

Step 1: Prepare the batter

  • Firstly, mix milk and lemon juice in a bowl, keep it for 5 minutes – this will work like buttermilk.
  • Now sift flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, salt and sugar in a large bowl.
  • Now slowly add buttermilk, oil and vanilla and mix.
  • Make sure there are no lumps. If needed, you can add some more milk.

Step 2: Bake the cake

In the oven:

  • Grease the cake tin and pour the batter.
  • Bake in a preheated oven at 180°C for 30–35 minutes.
  • Check with a toothpick – if it comes out clean, the cake is ready.

Without oven:

  • Put salt or stand in a heavy bottom vessel/cooker.
  • Pre-heat for 10 minutes.
  • Place the mould, cover and cook on medium flame for 35–40 minutes.

Step 3: Cool the cake

  • Remove the cake and cool for 15–20 minutes and then demold.

Step 4: Decorate (optional)

  • You can sprinkle melted dark chocolate, chocolate ganache, whipped cream or just powdered sugar on top.
